Australia are the protecting champions having won the match in 1999, 2003 and 2007. They were also the losing finalists in 1996 and separately from a bad home World Cup in 1992, they had done well in 1987 as well as the winners of the event. So, Australia have won the match four times, while West Indies have won it twice. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won the cricket World Cup once each.
It is said to be the most open World Cup after 1999 given that the Aussies will not go into the match winning everything that gets thrown at that.
